I’ve just made a new HoFo Ion ROM, which is based on nk02‘s modification’s. The Ion ROM is a special ROM that was given to developers by Google – it is the fastest Android ROM out there now. The best part about this ROM for Rogers users is that there is no time stamp issue in this ROM. Other than the speed, don’t expect anything special. One thing that you will notice is that you will not have an “H” in your status bar when using 3G HSPA data, but your Magic is in fact transferring data at HSPA speeds.
Here are some of the changes that I’ve made to nk02′s lite version:
- modified the boot.img for the Rogers HTC Magic
- replaced the WLAN driver to make the WiFi functional
- added all of the Hero ringtones
- added Exchange support
- added Quick Office
- added PDF viewer
- overclocked to 528 MHz (max)
- removed G1 boot logo, and replaced it with the HTC Magic logo
- removed unnecessary files from ROM
- fixed Haykuro’s keyboard (it wasn’t working)
- removed SuperUser Whitelist, you still have SuperUser functionality
Please keep in mind that you DO have to wipe if you are coming from a different ROM.
Update 1.08
- updated to the latest TigerTael kernel, now with BFS
- updated WLAN driver
- updated dalvikvm to the 2.1 JAC version
- updated MarketEnabler to version 3.0.2
- updated Loccy’s Better Browser to version 1.4.2
- you will get a Google Gears error the first time you open your Browser due to the kernel update one time
- I will not be providing updates to the themed versions any more

Update 1.05
- updated to the Amon_RA kernel, as it has seem to fix all of the bugs in gboddina’s ROM
- updated to Amon_RA’s wlan.ko
- set minimum CPU speed to 128 MHz, battery life is now improved
- imported build.prop settings from Amon_RA’s ROM, they should increase data transfer speeds

Hey, thanks for making this!
I’ve updated to your ROM in hopes that I would get Wifi tethering working but no luck. Do you know if Wireless Tether for Root works for you?
Paul Weiss
July 19, 2009 at 10:46 pm
The problem with the wireless tethering is that the Rogers kernel doesn’t have all of the features enabled that permits this feature to be enabled. Hopefully someone will rebuild the kernel really soon…
In the mean time you can use Azilink if you don’t mind USB tethering:

is this update also for htc magic users who have the htc hero rom?
Paul Weiss
August 2, 2009 at 7:39 pm
This ROM is for most 32A Magic’s, and modded especially for Rogers users. You can of course use this ROM even if you have used the Hero ROM previously. Mind you, a wipe might be required; but try it out without a wipe first.

Hey Paul – thanks a lot for creating this ROM – OSS FTW!
I was just wondering if you had to root the Roger’s Magic before applying this ROM? Also, should we update the Radio and SPL?
Thanks again, keep up the cool work.

Thanks so much.. This ROM rocks and turned my phone into a true iPhone competitor. Few things to note in order for me to get it working – had to wipe phone first and had to reboot several times. Cheers

Just upgraded to this ROM (1.03)and it’s definitely much snappier than the original Roger’s ROM.
I had a bit of a scare when it wouldn’t get past the “ANDROID” screen and I thought I might have bricked my phone. However after I wiped the phone it booted cleanly.
Good job!

Is there any way to get rid of the Rogers screen when the magic first turns on.. I would rather have a picture of something Android etc…
Whenever I see a Rogers logo it reminds me how much we over pay for service in Canada.
Paul Weiss

At the moment there is no way to change it

Thanks for the updates. One thing that would be helpful is a little descriptive blurb about what is better/worse with each update.

Will the rom work with Rogers new HSPA Enhanced network speed (21mbps)?

No. In actuality it doesn’t matter, as none of the phones applications or memory can handle such speeds.

thanks i’ll wait for that then! are we talking weeks, months or no idea?
i just love how rock solid this rom is. i’ve had no problems with HoFo-Ion-1.03 on my htc magic sapphire 32A. i’d like to get the new donut features (esp. google maps navigation) but also i’m not one to be right on the cutting edge, i like stability, i mean i use my phone every day – its gotta work with no probs!

Hi, what does rogers kernel mean?
My htc magic mobile doesn’t boot up after I did a factory reset. The combination keys home+back+power, home+power, back+power work on it.
It’s a 32A one and HBOOT-1.33.0009 (SAPP10000). Can I download your hofoion108.zip and flash it to my mobile?
Thanks

the nk02 page says:
> This rom is for VODAFONE HTC Magic (spl 1.33.0004 or haykuro spl 2004/2005)

Does your roms work on other spls?
Thanks
